One of the most interesting sights that a visitor to Chester can take in, the annual Midwinter Watch Parade offers visitors the opportunity to learn quite a bit about local culture and history and have a good time doing so. The parade was originally established as a midsummer event wherein people wearing very specific ceremonial costumes would march through the streets of the city to herald the advent of winter.

In modern times, the Midwinter Watch parade does retain quite a bit of its traditional glory. Participants usually create floats and wear period costumes while marching from the Chester Cathedral to the Town Hall. There are traditional ceremonies such as juggling and fire breathing, as well as Angel and Devil puppets which hearken back to the parade’s religious origins, as well as a parade of children in swan costumes, representing the city’s patron saint, Saint Werburgh. Truly a spectacle to behold.
