In the old days of England, each and every town was surrounded by massive defensive walls interspersed with gates through which all travelers had to pass in order to regulate inter-city traffic. The walls also served the important function of acting as defense against foreign invaders, and were frequently employed for this purpose throughout the long history of England and the rest of the United Kingdom.
Of all the cities, however, the only one that still has its walls intact in their entirety is the city of Chester. The total length of the walls is some two miles long, and guided tours of it are available, which should be of interest to visitors and tourists. The trip will award you with some beautiful views of the city which can’t be had from anywhere else as well as insights into the region’s history. The complete walk is so rich with sights to see that it can take a full two hours to walk just two miles!
