The Bangor Castle, now the Town Hall, was once the residence of the Honorable Robert Edward Ward. Construction on the building ended in 1852. The Castle is not so much a castle as a mansion. It is an elegant structure atop a hill looking down on Bangor Bay. Among its many fine points are the gardens.

The Castle is in the Jacobethan revival style. A product of Victorian times, it is a soft beige reflection of the period. Consisting of two storeys, the Castle is picturesque with steep gables and mullioned windows. It is all of sandstone imported from Ayrshire. It has a battlemented ower stretching upwards for three storeys fronted by a clock. On top of the tower, you can see the weathervane. The Castle is no longer a palatial residence. Bangor Castle became home to the Town Hall. Its Music Room doubled as the Council Chambers. Other portions of the Castle are home to the North Down Heritage Center.
