The most famous saloon or bar in Belfast is the Crown Liquor Saloon. It dates from 1839 to 1840. It has, however, undergone many interior design alterations since it first opened. Its past is colorful. Its drinks are plentiful. Its décor is both cozy and ornate.

The exterior of the Crown is colorful. The tiles are Italian. The name of the bar is obviously from the 1885 mosaic of a crown gracing the floor as you step to enter. The interior, tweaked over the years, most memorably by Patrick Flanagan in 1898. The features falsh back to a Victorian era and a bar determined to attract a more upper crust crowd. There are marble, ceramics, mirrors and mahogany. The bar, highly decorative, with brass pipes and taps, stretches along one side, dominating it completely. On the other side are the 10 snugs or booths. Lions and gryphons are an integral part of their design, sitting high abive their entrances. Notice the wall panelling. Originally, they were intended for the Titanic’s sister ship, the Brittanic.
