If you admire old church ruins and ancient graveyards, I suggest you visit Cushendall. Here, just outside of town, on Layde Road, are the ruins of the old Cushendall Parish Church made of local red sandstone. Nearby is the old Graveyard with some unusual markers. It is a perfect place to hike to along the coastal path.

A church has been on this site since the early days. A religious establishment stood here in 1306. The remains today are from a 17th century edifice. This structure was long and narrow. At one point, it had a thatched roof. The tower in the west end is still standing. Last services took place in the Layde church in 1790. After visiting the church, head to the graveyard. Of particular significance are two markers: One is an ancient cross with a hole in its center. It is possibly an old Celtic Pagan wedding stone. The other is a Celtic Cross marking the grave of Dr. James MacDonell. He helped found Belfast Hospital
