In Belfast, you can see the impressive if somber St. Anne’s Cathedral. This cavernous church is in the Hiberno-Romanesque style by Thomas Drew. He built it between 1898 and 1904. It was built around and now stands on the site of an earlier religious structure – the 1776 St. Anne’s Parish Church.

St. Anne’s Cathedral features magnificent stained glass windows. Inside, you step onto a black and white marble floor. It is in a maze pattern. The black squares lead to a dead end while the white leads to salvation. There are also 10 interior pillars. Each names one of Belfast’s professional fields: Agriculture, Arts, Commerce, Healing, Masonry, Music, Science, Shipbuilding, Theology, and Women’s Work. Around the nave, you will see stone carvings of Gabriel, Michael, Raphael and Uriel, the four archangels. You should also stop and look at the mosaic in the Baptismal area. It depicts the Creation. If you look closely, you will see representatives of the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. It is by Gertrude and Margaret Martin and took them seven years to create from 150,000 pieces of colored glass.
