According to legend and history, St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Church of Ireland) in Armagh is the site of the Saint’s original stone church in 445 AD. The current structure dates back to the 13th century, its ground plan reflective of architectural styles of this period. It took shape under the guidance of Archbishop O'Scanlon.  This Gothic building underwent a return to its original style during 1834 to 1840 under Archbishop Beresford.

The Cathedral is a small structure on top of a hill. In the north transept, it contains a plaque marking the burial place of the great Irish High King Brian Bornu (Boraimhe). He was laid to rest here in 1014 after his death at the Battle of Clontarf against the Vikings.. The south aisle bears a memorial to the Archbishop Richard Robinson, founder of the Observatory and Public Library in the city of Armagh. The church also contains several treasures. It has the remains of an 11th century Celtic cross. Among several granite figures of importance, you will find the Tandagee Idol. It dates from the Bronze Age.
