Armagh is a unique city. It is the only city with two cathedrals dedicated to Saint Patrick. One is the church of Ireland or Anglican. The other is Roman Catholic. St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral is not as old as its Anglican rival is. The Anglican Church dates from the 13th century while construction on the Roman Catholic Church took place between 1838 and 1873. Two architects were responsible for the initial work, including J. J. McCarthy. In fact, consecration did not occur until July 1904.

The Catholic St. Patrick’s is an imposing structure, high on a hill. It features two spires balancing its neo-Gothic façade. The inside, however, is almost Byzantine in its décor. It features wall-to-wall mosaics in bright hues. The windows are brilliant with their choice of stained glass. The sanctuary is very modern. It dates from 1981 and you will notice the distinct crucifix, holder and tabernacle. They stand out against the riot of colored mosaics.
