Belfast City Hall sits in splendor in Donegall Square. Its architect was Alfred Brumwell Thomas. He oversaw its construction from 1896 to 1906.This Edwardian building is massive, modeled as it is on St. Paul’s Cathedral. As the administrative and geographic center of the city, it rightly dominates the square. The marble statue of Queen Victoria in front, merely serves to emphasize its superior girth and stature.

The first thing many notice is the dome. The green copper dome rises 53 meters (173 feet) high. This Great Dome adds a sense of another layer to the building, somewhat granting it the appearance of a wedding cake. Inside, the grandeur continues. The grand staircase, utilizing three different types of marble, the stained glass and huge portraits revealing the different aspects of the city’s industrial history and the three elaborate reception rooms, all add to the portrait. If you can, venture into the oak-paneled chambers of the Council Room. Admire the intricate series of fine arches. Afterwards, visit the garden to see the memorial to the victims of the Titanic and for the landing troops of the United States Expeditionary Forces.
