If you have visited the Abbey, you may want to discover more about its history. The best place to go to is the North Down Heritage Center. You can find it in the former Bangor Castle on Castle Park Avenue. It is in the converted stables, laundry and stores of the Bangor Castle.

The Center first opened in 1984. It is a small museum, but a complete one. It offers activities for children, school groups and seniors as well as for tourists. Through the use of various forms of multi-media, the history of the region comes alive. The North Down Heritage Center looks at the area’s natural history, archeology and cultural history. It has some ancient Ballycrochan Swords, dating back to around 500 BC, as well as an early 9th century handbell. A unique artifact is the milepost with distances marked in Irish miles. The Center also has a facsimile of “The Antiphonary of Bangor.” To see the original, you would have to go to the Ambrosian Library in Milan, Italy. If you visit during the summer, you can take part in “Observation Beehive.”
