If you want to go shopping in Belfast, you have several choices. You can wander over to Royal Avenue for bookstores and clothing stores. You can also head to the multi-story shopping world of Castlecourt Shopping Center. If, however, you are interested in absorbing local flavor and color, go to St. George’s Market.

St. George’s Market dates back to at least 1604. The current building, however, is only from 1890 to 1896. The Market is primarily a weekend affair. On Saturday, from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m., you will find some of the freshest local produce, finest cheeses, fish and meat available. In addition, you can now find a range of goods at the Variety Market on Fridays. On Fridays, there are some 248 stalls with a cornucopia of goods. You can find local crafts and artwork as well as second hand goods. There is furniture and books, fish and flowers, antiques and items gently used. The Market house also has special events held throughout the year. There is a Ha’penny Fair as well as a traditional Christmas Market.
