Queen’s University in Belfast is Northern Ireland’s largest and most respected university. It began as the desire of Queen Victoria to provide a nondenominational alternative to the Anglican Trinity College in Dublin. Queen’s first opened in 1849 in a red-brick sandstone building designed by Charles Lanyon. It became a full-fledged university in 1908. In the beginning, it only had 195 students. Today, it has more than 25,231. It also employs more than 3,500 people as staff, support staff, research and other personnel. In fact, the University is one of Belfast’s largest employers.

The University of Queen’s campus consists of no less than 250 buildings. These include buildings in Belfast and those in such places as Portaferry.
