In the town of Carrickfergus, you will find one of the best-preserved and impressive castles in Northern Ireland. This is a virtually intact Norman Castle. Construction began on this structure in the 1180's and continued to the 17th century. . By the 12th century, construction had completed the central keep, by the 13th, the outer walls and ward were done. In the 16th century, to increase protective and defensive measures, they added red brick gun ports. Carrickfergus Castle has three wards: inner, middle and outer. The inner ward features a further enclosure, a curtain wall. A large Castle, it requires you spend some time in exploration of its various features.
The exterior is most impressive. The interior is less so, but makes up for it if you are a child. Here and there are waxwork type figures of knights and horses and soldiers and archers. There are walls murals, audio visuals and displays of armor and other equipment. In the summer, you can attend Medieval Banquets and Medieval Fairs. There is also a craft market
