One of the primary religious and architectural attractions in Carlisle, the Carlisle Cathedral offers both an artistic masterwork and a historical landmark all in one to visitors traveling the United Kingdom. Originally constructed in the 12th century, it’s one of the oldest Cathedrals in the United Kingdom, and the restorations that it underwent in the 1850's kept true to the original plans as much as possible.
The interior of the Cathedral is an astonishingly beautiful site with massive vaulted ceilings adorned with paintings reflecting the majesty of the night sky, and a huge “East Window” which dominates one end of the structure and fills the main chamber with beautiful warm light during sunrise. Stained glass decorations in the windows themselves represent scenes from the life of Christ, and are thought to be among the most well rendered stained glass artworks in the entire country. Visitors who love art, history, or who wish to make a pilgrimage to a significant religious landmark should be certain to stop by the Carlisle Cathedral.
