The town of Dawlish in Devon, England was not always the seaside resort that it is known to be today. From Roman times, when it was a major producer of salt, to more recent history and its operation as a fishing port, Dawlish has an interesting history. All of that history is tied to the sea and the Dawlish Water, the name for the river that runs through the town. The name is thought to come from a Brythonic name for ‘devil water’ since the erosion of the region’s rocks can make the water run reddish in color.

Today’s visitors staying in discount hotels in Dawlish can enjoy the waterfront in several different ways. Depending on its location, you may be able to walk from your budget Dawlish hotel down to The Lawn, the central public park that is located near the seafront. You can cross the South Devon railway sea wall and the tracks of the Riviera Line to get to the sandy beach in Dawlish. Or, hop aboard the train to enjoy one of the most scenic rail lines in Britain. For unusual animal sightings, visit the Dawlish Water sanctuary for the black swans and the other exotic birds that live there.
