The
capital of East Lothian is the town of Haddington. This community of about
8,000 dates back to the 6th century when it was part of the Anglo Saxon
kingdom of Bernicia. At the center of Haddington is the 18th century Town
House, which once served as a council house, courthouse and jail. A major
Haddington landmark is St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, which was founded in the
14th century. Close by is the 12th century Nungate Bridge. Lennoxlove House
is a 13th century estate that was the home of William Maitlin, Secretary of
State to Mary Queen of Scots. In the Garleton Hills of East Lothian, visitors
can see the Hopetoun Monument, a 95-foot tower erected to the memory of John
Hope, 4th earl of Hopetoun. Aberlady Bay has a unique attraction for people
staying in budget hotels in East Lothian. Eight wrecked ships from the 19th
and early 20th centuries lie in the waters here, and have been designated as
maritime monuments. Aberlady Bay is part of the Transnational North Sea
Trail.
