Battle is a pretty little town that was named for the Battle of Hastings. It is located in East Sussex county of the United Kingdom. This historic battle left behind the Abbey of St. Martin, which was built by William the Conqueror in 1095. Today, the ruins of the Abbey are an attraction most visitors to Battle want to see. The battleground where the war was fought is also well worth the time spent visiting it. Both the Abbey and the battleground are under the jurisdiction of the English Heritage group. Visitors to Battle in East Sussex will want to be sure to take a walk along High Street. This is the location of many stunning Georgian structures. If you walk right around the area where the Abbey is located, the various houses you see there were built during the 1700s. The parish Church of St. Mary was built during the 12th century. Inside this church are wonderful 14th century paintings, some of them on the walls of the structure.
