      Originally a Roman settlement, Great Dunmow in Essex, England, is a small market town which combines historic buildings, such as a 16th century town hall, with the convenience of modern shopping facilities. Every Leap Year, Great Dunmow holds a fascinating ritual, known as the Flitch Trials, in which local married couples have to prove to a jury that they have not quarreled for a year and a day. Visitors to the Maltings Museum can find out more about this ancient local custom, as well as much else concerning the town’s history.Wandering a little further from your hotel, the windmills at Thaxted and Finchingfield make for an interesting excursion. Thaxted is home to many other interesting buildings too, including almshouses and a restored, timber-framed Guildhall. Nearby Chickney offers a Saxon Church with a 14th century tower, whilst at Stansted Mountfitchet, visitors can take a journey back in time to 1066 at Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village. The castle and village have both been reconstructed on their original site and provide an excellent representation of how things were.
