The Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway is the perfect way to relive the romantic days of steam, and passengers can take the train on an 11km round trip to Birkhill. Situated right by Birkhill Station, the Fireclay Mine provides visitors with the opportunity to see fossils which are 300 million years old, and tour guides will lead you down into the beautiful Avon Gorge before taking you into the caverns where you will learn how fireclay was mined and what it was used for. Another fascinating trip is to Dunmore House. Here you will find a folly, built in 1761 and designed by an unknown architect. Why a folly? Because the roof of the building which forms part of the walled garden of Dunmore Park is in the perfect shape of a pineapple. The fruit were apparently grown in hothouses in Scotland in the early 18th century, which perhaps explains the reasoning behind it.
