Glasgow International Airport is just eight miles or thirteen kilometres from the centre of the city and handles almost ten million passengers each year. This makes it Scotland’s second most important airport, and the eighth busiest in the UK. The airport continues to grow at a rapid pace with extensions being planed to keep it competitive. It is owned and operated by BAA and is the hub of a number of airports including Loganair, easyjet and Flyglobespan.

The initial airstrip was first opened in 1939 as a training airport and RAF station HQ. It continued to grow and remained an important RAF training facility and defence installation until 1963. It was at this time that Glasgow Corporation decided that the city needed a commercial and passenger airport and it began civilian aviation. The terminal building was an impressive Art Deco design but this has not survived due to relocation and expansion.
