The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall is housed in a custom, purpose built building which was constructed in the late 1980’s and opened officially in October of 1990. The construction process was particularly controversial and a number of setbacks were experienced during the procedure. However, it now dominates Sauchiehall Street.

Originally intended as a replacement for St Andrews Hall which burned down in 1962, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall was developed as part of Glasgow’s City of Culture Status in 1990. The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall was also an important symbol of the regeneration of central Glasgow that was being conducted during this period. After decades of decline, the construction of The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall along with a new shopping center and other developments brought life and prosperity back to this important part of the city. In honour of the role played by Lord Provost Pat Lally, the building has been nicknamed Lally’s Palace.
