The House for an Art Lover is one of the purest and most enduring works of the famous artist and architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret MacDonald. The design was producted in 1901 but construction did not begin until well after their deaths, in 1989. The building was finalised and opened to the public in 1996. John Kane and Graeme Robertson were responsible for realising the initial designs which were almost a century old. Today, original portfolio designs are on display in the building.

The famous German design magazine, Zeitschrift fur Innendekoration, held a competition in 1900 and the design was entered into the competition. It was disqualified due to late entry but was awarded a prize for the quality of the design and the “uniform configuration of interior and exterior.” It is now one of the most interesting architectural gems of Glasgow and is part of the Glasgow School of Art.
