St Andrew’s Cathedral is one of the largest and most impressive churches in Glasgow. During the Reformation and until 1778, Catholic worship was outlawed in Glasgow. However, as religious freedoms increased, and also due to a massive influx of Catholic immigrants from Ireland, the city’s Catholic population continued to grow from 1778 and during the early eighteen hundreds. This led to increasing calls for a Catholic church to be built in the city and in 1817, St. Andrew’s Cathedral had been completed.

The Church was designed by James Gillespie Graham and was intended to serve the entire Catholic community of Glasgow. In 1805 it is estimated that there were only 450 Catholics in the entire city, but this had grown to over three thousand by the time St. Andrew’s Cathedral had been completed. The construction of the church was hampered by hostile locals who vandalized the works, until guards were hired to protect the site during the night.
