The Cathedral on Great Western Road in Glasgow’s west end is commonly referred to by locals and visitors to the city alike as St. Mary’s Cathedral, however, the actual name of the Cathedral is The Cathedral Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. The church was opened in 1873, however, it was not until exactly twenty years later, in 1893, that work on its sixty three metre spire was completed. By that time the church had been in regular use for twenty years. However the addition of the completed spire added greatly to the reputation of the church and by 1908 it had been elevated to Cathedral status by the Church. It was designed by George Gilbert Scott.

Due its prime location at the heart of Glasgow’s west end, St Mary’s Cathedral has often played host to a number of cultural events including concerts, art exhibition and a variety of other events.
