Glasgow Central Train Station is the largest railway terminal in Scotland. It opened as the Northern Terminus of the Caledonian Railway in 1879 and ever since, has been one of the most important transportation facilities in the city. Outside of London, the station continues to be the busiest train station in the UK. It is also a hub for many of Glasgow’s urban and suburban train services. It is the terminus for all inter-city train services south of Glasgow and the border.

The original train station had eight platforms on the north bank of the Clyde and these were all linked to Bridge Street station by a bridge and four track line. Over the years the station has grown ceaselessly with new platforms being added constantly. The station is also an important retail and entertainment centre with a number of shops, bars and restaurants. It also contains its own theatre, gallery and the Arches nightclub.
