The University of Paisley actually occupies four separate campuses, located in Paisley, Ayr, Hamilton and Dumfries. It offers valuable tertiary learning facilities in the vicinities and achieved university status in 1992. The university began its life in 1897 as a mainly vocational institution and now has over eighteen thousand students spread across the seven schools that comprise the university.

The University of Paisley had a notable merger in August 2007 when it merged with Bell College, which was based in Hamilton. The merged institution officially changed its name to the University of the West of Scotland as at that date. The University specialises in offering business courses, computing programmes, education programmes, engineering and science degrees, health, nursing and midwifery, media language and music as well as a wide range of social sciences.
