The University of Strathclyde began its life in 1796 as Anderson’s Institution. It was started by John Anderson as a centre for practical and vocational studies and was granted a royal charter in 1964. From its initial focus on science and engineering, the university has branched out into a far wider range of subjects since 1964. The University has grown to be one of the leading academic institutions in Scotland and now has over twenty thousand students from over eighty countries. The university is also acknowledge as a centre of excellence in a number of research fields.

The University Campus is less beautiful and interesting than many other UK university campuses and this reflects the fact that many of the buildings have been constructed in the last thirty years. Some of the older buildings include the Royal College Building which was completed in 1912 and the James Weir Building completed in 1958.
