The University of the West of Scotland is actually the name that was taken on by the University of Paisley when it merged with Bell College in 2007. Bell college was a notable college of higher education and the merger occurred on the first of August 2007. On the thirtieth of November, the new merged institution was renamed by the Privy Council of the House of Lords as the University of the West of Scotland. While this change in name was resisted by many in the town of Paisley, it was a sensible step to take, given that the universities four campuses and eighteen thousand students were then spread over a large area comprising much of the west of Scotland.

The University is growing rapidly and fast becoming one of the most respected educational establishments in Scotland. It offers an alternative to the urban campuses located at Glasgow’s other universities.
