Glasgow Prestwick Airport is actually located some forty-six kilometers, or twenty nine miles south of the city of Glasgow. This has led many passengers to feel misled due to the time and expense of travelling between the airport and the city of Glasgow. Nevertheless the airport is a successful facility with Ryanair using it as a hub and each year, almost two and a half million passengers use the airport.
Prestwick is also extremely important as a commercial airport and remains Scotland’s busiest commercial or cargo airfield. This is mainly due to the lower costs of using this airport compared to Scotland’s other main airports, which are all located much closer to major cities. The airport was initially used, in 1934, as a training airfield for military and civilian aviation. During World War II the airport developed very quickly in order to handle the large volumes of American military air traffic.
