The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Center is the largest public events venue in Scotland and has a total exhibition area of ten thousand square meters. It has been the venue for many of the largest concerts in the UK, including performances by U2, Christina Aquilera, The Rolling Stones and Justin Timberlake. It is located on the north bank of the River Clyde and is an important element in the regeneration of this part of the city, which had previously suffered from a serious amount of decline and deprivation due to the death of the ship building industry along the Clyde. This process began in 1983 with the reclamation of disused dockland.
Due to its color and outward appearance, the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Center has been nicknamed the Big Red Shed by locals. The area is still being further developed and a new venue, known as Scotland’s National Arena should be forming part of the SECC complex in the near future.
