The present site of the Theatre Royal in Glasgow has actually been the cite of three theatres in the past. However, the previous two were destroyed by unfortunate disasters. The first, the Bayliss’s Royal Colosseum Theatre and Opera House was opened in 1867 and this theatre changed its name to the Theatre Royal when it was granted a royal charter two years later. However, in 1879 a massive fire destroyed the theatre and it required a complete reconstruction, which was overseen by the famous theatre architect, Charles J Phipps, who used the shell of the previous theatre but completely reconstructed the interior. However, this second theatre was destroyed by another fire in 1895.

The present theatre, again re-using the original shell, was opened in 1904 and has been making a name for itself with top class drama ever since. The Theatre Royal is also the home of the Scottish Opera and the Scottish Ballet which are two of Glasgow’s best known artistic institutions.
