Visitors to Croydon who would like to learn something of the region’s rich and colorful history should make the Addington Palace their first stop. Throughout the years, the Palace has served many different functions and has been the site of many different historically significant events. As such, studying the history of Addington Palace is akin to studying the history of Croydon and the surrounding area itself.

Dating back some six centuries, the house was one where former king Henry VIII began his infamous courtship with the lady who would eventually become one of his many wives, Anne Boleyn. Later on, it would be relegated from the status of “house” to “palace” and would serve as the estate for a line of six different Archbishops of the Canterbury diocese. More recently, it was home for the Royal School of Church Music, but today is mostly just a tourist attraction where guided tours reminisce about these events from days gone past.
