Visitors staying in cheap hotels in London near St. Paul’s Cathedral might be familiar with the old rhyme, “London calling from ten to ten; London calling Sir Christopher Wren.” In the aftermath of the disastrous Great Fire of London in 1666, the medieval Cathedral of St. Paul’s was a smoking ruin. The renowned architect Sir Christopher Wren was given the task of rebuilding it. His revolutionary ideas met with considerable resistance from London’s conservatives, but he won out. Wren constructed one of Europe’s grandest churches. Besides standing as a testament to Wren’s genius for more than three centuries, St. Paul’s became a symbol of defiance of Nazi aggression during World War II, when it survived the heavy bombing of London.

When you come to the church you will first be impressed by its cool, spacious, and beautifully ordered Baroque interior. This was the setting for the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill and the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Here you can see the tombs of the hero Lord Nelson, the legendary nurse Florence Nightingale, and of Sir Christopher Wren himself. In the Whispering Gallery you can personally test the unusual acoustics that allow a slight whisper to be heard all around the great dome. St. Paul’s dome, 360 feet (110 m) high, is second in size only to that of St. Peter’s in Rome.
