Kings Cross in London

The Kings Cross district of London has some interesting attractions. Most are a quick bus ride away and provide an entire day of sightseeing and tours. Within close proximity of the attractions are shopping and restaurants for an afternoon lunch or just a quick bite between tours. The gardens of Kings Cross are open to the public and provide a quiet place to rest between sights. Admiralty Arch, located in Trafalgar Square ( a little over a mile and a half from Kings Cross) is an ornamental Edwardian arch which stands at the entrance of the shopping mall. Five arches connect to make one large arch in Portland stone that marks the route of royalty to St. Paul's Cathedral. The center of the arch remains closed until used for royalty to pass through. The smaller arches are open to autos and pedestrians. Albert Memorial is located in Kensington Gardens and is almost 4 miles from Kings Cross. The ten year restoration project on the memorial to Queen Victoria's husband was recently completed. It was designed in 1872 by Sir Gilbert Scott and unveiled by the Queen in 1876. Albert sits on his throne surrounded by animals that represent the continents and sculptures of colleges and museums inspired by him. It is at the southernmost end of Hyde Park.
