For art lovers staying in discount hotels near Tate Britain in London, this extraordinary museum is a must see. Formerly known as the Tate Gallery, Tate Britain exhibits the world’s largest collection of British art from the 16th century to the present. The collection includes the priceless Turner Bequest, which the celebrated landscape artist J.M.W. Turner left to the nation in 1851. It is housed in the Clore Galleries in a Post-Modernist building designed by Sir James Stirling. The galleries in Tate Britain follow a broad sweep in chronological order leading from the early 16th century to the 21st century. As you pass through the galleries, you will see such great works as Davis des Grange’s The Saltonstall Family (1637), John Constable’s Flatford Mill (1816 -17), James Whistler’s Nocturne in Blue: Old Battersea Bridge (1872 -75), and J.W. Waterhouse’s Lady of Shalott (1888). A star attraction is J.M.W. Turner’s Peace – Burial at Sea (1842).

Tate Britain draws its displays from a massive collection of works, so there is always variety to the shows. The gallery has undergone major renovations in recent years, and displays are changed frequently. One wing is dedicated to works on loan from other galleries.
