Your discount hotel near the Women’s Library of London puts you within easy reach of the United Kingdom’s most extensive resource for women’s history. It focuses primarily on British women and the British women’s movement in the 19th and 20th centuries, but also has international material. This institution was established in 1926 as the Library of the London Society for Women’s Service. In 1953 it became the Millicent Fawcett Society. Since 2002, when it received its present name, the library has been housed in a new building on Old Castle Street, and is now part of the London Metropolitan University.

From their accommodations in budget hotels near the Women’s Library of London, students of the feminist movement and the history of women in Britain have access to over 60,000 books and other publications. There is a reading room, archives, museum collections, and an exhibition hall. The library also has education and events facilities. The program of exhibitions in the museum space is constantly changing. Topics have included just about every facet of women’s experiences: beauty queens, female suffrage, politics, reproductive rights, sexuality, home and family, health, education, office work, and prostitution. There are lectures, films, reading groups, and short courses. The library’s goal is to document and explore women’s lives in the United Kingdom, past, present and future. The facilities are open to all visitors, male and female.
