Southwark is made up of five boroughs. Bankside and Borough run along the south bank of the Thames River and have been invested in recently to increase development and are now considered to be Southwark's jewel. The area is accessible from the city by way of the Millennium Bridge and is full of cultural highlights, namely the beginning of two theaters, The Rose and The Globe. You can also tour London's history of penal heritage by visiting the Clink Prison museum. Rotherhite features some of London's maritime history, for it was at this spot that the Mayflower set sail for America in 1620. The Mayflower pub has many items still on display from the era.

Today the docks are gone, the working ones at least, but the maritime heritage lives on in the water sports provided for the tourists. Bermondsey is where the hip and fun loving go to dance the night away and Dulwhich is reserved, elegant, and one of the most relaxed places to visit in the district. Colleges and Galleries make up most of this area, and provide a nice park for a quiet afternoon. Camberwell and Peckham are the ethnic centers in the borough, where you can try a vast range of eclectic cuisine.
