London Zoo Details
The famous London Zoo, in the citys Regents Park district, has been in operation since 1828. This was the home of Jumbo the elephant, and a Canadian bear named Winnipeg that was the inspiration for A.A. Milnes Winnie the Pooh. Formally known as the London Zoological Gardens, the park covers 36 acres (15 ha). It houses around 5,000 animals representing 650 species, many of which are on the endangered list. Here you can see Sumatran tigers, sloth bears, and Mexican red-kneed bird-eating spiders, along with giraffes, zebras, and the ever-popular monkeys. There is an aquarium, an aviary, a penguin pool, and a childrens zoo. Pony rides are available for children.
Today the London Zoo is also a major research and conservation center. Wildlife enthusiasts will be interested to know that many innovations have been made to improve the animals accommodations. The Asian lions have their own open terrace. Rhinos and elephants have been moved to roomier accommodations at Whipsnade Park, a separate facility owned by the London Zoo. The new gorilla enclosure, Gorilla Kingdom, is not to be missed. One of the best exhibits is the Web of Life, which takes visitors on an educational journey through the Earths vast range of life forms. The easiest way to get to the Zoo is by London Waterbus Company.
