Berkhampsted Castle became a popular country residence for Norman and Plantagenet monarchs. The castle ruins are now a must-see for history buffs staying in discount hotels in Berkhampsted. Those stone walls once echoed with the footsteps of such illustrious persons as Thomas Becket, Edward the Black Prince and Geoffrey Chaucer. King John II of France was held prisoner here in 1353.

Berkhampsted’s St. Peter’s Church is one of the largest churches in Hertfordshire. It dates back to at least 1222. It has been a place of business since the 13th century when it was a goldsmith or jeweler’s shop. More recently the building has housed a pharmacy and a real estate office.
