What exactly is a Martello? This is a question that visitors to the Folkestone region (and many other areas of England) are likely very much equipped to answer. A Martello is a type of defensive fort built during the 19th century for the purpose of defending the country against invaders, particularly during the campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars.
Some of these forts still stand today and as such, are interesting historical landmarks that provide some perspective into how wars were fought in ancient times as well as which areas of land were considered most valuable from a strategic viewpoint. Of the many surviving Martello Towers, Martello No. 3 in Folkestone is noteworthy for the condition that it maintains after nearly a century of disuse. The area around it also provides for magnificent views of the surrounding Folkestone landscape and scenery, making it a popular outing spot for both locals and tourists.
