Rosslyn Chapel is one of the greatest examples of the ability of Scottish Stone masons and craftsmen. The chapel was constructed in the 15th century in the town of Rosslin. Work on the structure was first started back in 1446 by Sir William St.Clair who was the last prince of Orkney. The castle is located 7miles outside of Edinburgh however it is well worth the trip. While the Chapel has always been famous its recent feature in the Da-Vinci code has resulted in a massive increase in the number of visitors visiting the place.
A visit to the chapel will allow you to enjoy the famous Apprentice Pillar as well as the unique barrel roof carved with elaborate stonework cut in the shape of flowers and stars. The whole structure is covered with carvings so setting aside at least half a day would be necessary to give you full appreciation of the Roslyn.
