Our favourite hotels near St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral

St Mary's was built in 1879 so by Edinburgh Standards could be considered fairly new. Designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, St Mary’s is a perfect example of neo-Gothic building. The cathedral has three spires which are clearly visible throughout the city and particularly from Princes street. St. Mary’s dominated the west end skyline and from closer inspection one can enjoy the elaborate architecture and craftsmanship incorporated into the design of the building.

Visiting the cathedral is well worth the trip with highlights including the stained glass window made by Paolozzi, a Rood Cross by Robert Lorimer and a high alter reredos which features a carved crucifixion. If you are lucky enough to be able to visit around 17.30 then you will be able to enjoy the singing of the cathedral’s world famous choir. They perform 7 days a week which is unique in Scottish churches performing twice on Sundays at 10.30 and then again at 3.30.
