Nelson Monument is located at the top of Calton Hill overlooking the beautiful Edinburgh skyline. Situated in the east end o the city centre the monument was erected as a tribute to Admiral Lord Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar on the 21 October 1805. The top of the Column boasts an upturned telescope which was designed by the famous Scottish architect Robert Burn. The telescope was constructed between 1807 and 1815.
While the monument is visible from much of the city it is also well worth taking a few hours to walk up Calton hill to enjoy the monument from closer range. In 1852 a time ball was added to the structure which lowers in sequence with the shooting of the one o’clock gun from Edinburgh castle each day. If you do take the time to go up the monument the views offered to you will blow your mind.
