Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771. He was a prolific writer and poet and shot to prominence throughout the European literally world in during his lifetime. Many histories now argue that Scott was the first great English language writher to have a truly international career during his lifetime. Many of his writings are still read throughout the world and remain classics. Some of his famous writings include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy and the Lady of the Lake Waverly.

After his death the some of the wealthy and famous citizens of Edinburgh got together and decided to erect a befitting monument to mark his outstanding career. In 1836 a competition was launched which invited architects to submit designs for a monument in his memory. IN 1840 construction began on a design submitted by George Meikle Kemp. The monument is located in the East Princes Street Gardens just off of Prices Street.
