Dirleton Castle features heavily in Scottish history since its construction back in the 12th century. The castle and its surrounding gardens is often viewed as one of the most romantic castles in Scotland with its renowned gardens. The herbaceous border of the Victorian garden is a Guinness world record holder as it is authenticated to be the longest herbaceous border in the world. The gardens also offer a lovely arts and crafts shop where tourists can pick up nice bits and pieces.
The castle gardens are accessible to wheelchair users however there are two steps leading to the inner court. Inside the castle is not so accessible with large flights of stairs. However all surfaces in the garden are wheelchair friendly. The gardens are beautifully done and offer a sort of sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the busy city outside. The main gate to the castle is situated 10m back from the main road.
