The Omagh District Council area covers approximately 1,139 square kilometers and is situated towards the east of Northern Ireland. Apart from the town of Omagh itself, the region has a number of smaller towns, including Drumquin, Dromore, Trillick, Carrickmore and Sixmilecross. The town of Omagh is one of the oldest towns in Ireland and is said to owe its origins to an abbey which was founded in 792AD. Nowadays, it is the main retail center for Tyrone and the West of Ulster, and visitors can look forward to an excellent shopping experience at the Main Street Mall, Great Northern Road Retail Park and the Showgrounds Retail Park, as well as along the town’s High Street. The Ulster American Folk Park, near Omagh, is an open-air museum where you can learn about the journey made by the Irish to America during the 1800's. You can visit the Gortin Glens Forest Park, situated just 16 kilometers north. Located within the boundaries of a large forest and in an area of spectacular natural beauty, you will find, amongst other things, a deer enclosure, as well as waterfalls and lakes.
