Bogs used to be a common sight in Northern Ireland. Today, you can no longer so easily locate them. Fortunately, many have become part of national or local reserves in an attempt to protect them from further degradation. Near Omagh, along the Upper Owenreagh River, you can visit the Black Bog Nature Reserve.

This is a lowland bog, raised and consisting of peat. The dome structure still remains rather intact. This allows the development of Spagnum moss hummocks and pool hummocks to continue. You can locate several different types of bog flora in the area, including rare mosses. The Black Bog Nature Reserve is also a beautiful place to go to if you enjoy spotting butterflies. These include Green Hairstreaks and Marsh Fritillaries. The Bog is also remarkable for its display of the evolution of vegetative growth from those common to a bog to those of a Fen swamp.
