There are castles and there are Castles. Northern Ireland can offer you both types. If you take a visit to the region of the Fermanagh Lakeland, you can visit a true castle. This is Enniskillen Castle. Here, you can roam the stone-carved battlements and avail yourself of two museums – one totally dedicated to the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers.

Enniskillen Castle was once home to the powerful and influential Gaelic Macguire leaders. They took control of the castle in the 16th century. The keep is Medieval in character and origin. The Castle, typically, is corbelled. The Watergate is a twin-turreted building to the rear of the castle. It dates from the 17th century. Within the 15th century keep, a former military barracks, you can view the medals, guns, uniforms and other regalia relating to the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers covering the period from 1689 to 1968. You can also visit the 1992 Heritage Center. It has displays on the history and the natural environment of Fermagh County. If you visit the arcaded barracks, you will find information and exhibits on the region’s historic and archeologically significant monuments.
