As you come into Derry (Londonderry), you will see one church rising above the city, dominating all around it. This is the oldest surviving building in the city. It is the first post-Reformation church built in the British Isles. This is St. Columb’s Cathedral. It is consecrated in the name of St. Columb. He had founded a Christian community in this place in the 6th century.

St. Columb’s is the work of William Parrot in 1633. Both its tower and main body are the original structures. The tall spire dates only from 1821. The porch under the spire is the location of the foundation stone of a 12th century Columban Church on this same site. The nave of St. Columb’s is solid and squat. It is the style known as Planter’s Gothic. The structure has austere thick stone walls and small windows. The roof is open-framed timber (1823). The interior underwent renovations in 1861/1862. Stained glass windows depict the Ascension and are from 1887. The Cathedral has the oldest set of bells in Ireland. They were a gift in 1638 from King Charles I of England.
