The Tower Museum in Derry (Londonderry), in Northern Ireland, is an award-winning museum. You will find it on Union Hall place, part of the famous and historic Derry city walls. It first opened to the public in 1992. If you are in the city, do take the time to visit this marvelous facility. The building is a modern reconstruction of an old fortified Medieval tower house. Inside, you will be able to view two permanent and well-organized exhibits.

The first permanent exhibit is, “The Story of Derry.” It is on the ground floor of the Tower Museum. It looks at the history of the city through historical characters such as Shane O’Neill, who pledged allegiance to Queen Elizabeth at court in 1562. The modern visual and audio effects bring the story of the city alive. The other permanent display is “An Armada Shipwreck.” This exhibit is on the fourth floor of the Tower Museum. It tells the tale of a Spanish ship, the “La Trinidad Valencera.” Part of the Spanish Armada’s invasion in 1588, the ship fell foul of the sea and sank in the waters just off the Donegall Coast. At the end of your visit, climb to the top and enjoy the panoramic view of the city and beyond.
